The C# compiler has a very sophisticated built-in toolbox that lets you set up this environment for development and testing. Each client you can create and use in your project has a tool box to edit it, in essence what you need it to do. This environment allows you to run a project by hand, check the registry and config file to make sure the project is loaded and can run, then you can automate the process of switching to the new version. I wrote a simple test to check is the properties that were created for the current build i.e. the new ref property. In the future I will want to have a look at all the unit test build tools that support doing this for me.
